Robert Dunlop was born on July 2, 1909 in Boston, Massachusetts to Scottish immigrant parents. His father was a marine engineer. He attended schools in Collingswood, New Jersey and graduated from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania in 1931. He married December 4, 1937. Robert G. Dunlop was the first non-Pew family member to serve as president of the Sun Company. He was elected to this position in 1947 after having worked for Sun since 1933.
